Marvellous Mother’s Day Treats

Mummy, ma, mum…whatever you call her, March is the month we celebrate Mother’s Day and traditionally show love and appreciation for the maternal figure in our lives.

This year, Mothering Sunday falls on 14 March and whilst recent Government announcements have outlined a Spring ‘roadmap to recovery’ from Covid restrictions, sadly lockdown won’t be lifted in time for any big family get togethers.

Just like in March 2020, this might be another Mother’s Day that’s not quite how we envisaged it. But if you can’t cook a family roast round at yours or take your mum out for a meal to her favourite restaurant, there are still plenty of great gift options and fantastic foodie treats available to show your mum how much you care.

And of course, even though its origins are traditional, motherhood comes in all shapes and sizes so whether it’s Mother’s Day or simply Other’s Day that you’re celebrating, Plymouth businesses have got you covered when it comes to treating the leading ladies in our lives.

If flowers are her thing, there are a wealth of great florists across the city who are geared up and ready to go to deliver beautiful bouquets and amazing arrangements for the big day. H Watts in Oreston also has a Box of Beautiful Things on offer which includes gorgeous flowers, pretty porcelain, scented candles, Belgian chocolates and macramé plant hangers to give gallons of goodies all in one go.

Cattedown Road florists The Flower Bar have teamed up with Bella’s Bakery to offer a treat box containing decadent and delicious edible treats alongside fabulous flowers. Whilst Devonport based Flower Fayre also has a great selection of houseplants and hangers, alongside traditional floral tributes, if gorgeous greenery is more her style.

Speaking personally, a day off cooking is what a lot of us mums appreciate, especially if yummy cake or afternoon tea is on the menu. Plymstock award winning bakers Just Like Mumma’s have come up trumps again with a selection of Mumma’s Day treats including Luxury Afternoon Tea, a stunning Floral Chocolate Cake, Cream Tea in a Box or Homemade Pink and White Marshmallows. Collection and local delivery are available to surprise your mum with some doorstep delights.

Barbican café and chocolate shop Chocaccino are also doing a special Afternoon Tea Box for delivery or collection and The Early Bird café on Mutley Plain are going all out with a seriously tempting Treat Box filled with doughnuts, brownies and truffles or a Pancake Sharing Platter complete with sweet and savoury toppings.

So that’s breakfast, tea and tiffin sorted…how about some other foodie favourites to tempt mum’s tastebuds? Vegan and veggie mothers will love the Treat, Cake or Brownie Boxes from Cosmic Kitchen. Each box of sweet treats includes plenty of plant based gorgeous goodies or how about a Savoury Hamper or one of their city-famous vegan roasts, available for pre-order, so your mum can put her feet up and her oven gloves down for the day?

Royal William Yard culinary connoisseurs Le Vignoble and Domeafavour Chocolate have also teamed up to create a Mother’s Day Hamper with a difference. Think rosé pink drinks, speciality cheeses and dessert flavoured chocolate bars with free delivery for PL1-PL5 addresses and a small charge of £5 for those in PL6-PL12.

If a drop of Mother’s Ruin is more your mum’s favourite tipple then Plymouth is the place for craft gins. Plymouth Gin Distillery and Barbican Botanics both have online shops and wine and spirit specialist Barrel and Still on St Andrew’s Street are open for take away on Thursday-Saturday and offer local delivery throughout the week. Or how about a beautifully packaged bottle of colour changing Chameleon Gin? The orange and pine infused artisan spirit, whose ingredients are locally foraged from field to bottle, has free delivery for Plymouth postcodes too.

Or if an original present would make her day instead, Rockpool Trading on the Barbican’s Southside Street has a gorgeous selection of locally designed and hand-made gifts on offer from artwork to jewellery, candles to soaps including some lovely Mother’s Day cards by local artists. You can buy online to click and collect from the shop on Tuesday to Friday from 2pm to 4pm or opt for free local delivery.

Other gorgeous gift ideas are available from Ocean Studios at Royal William Yard; Potter Tweeny van Mierlo has teamed up with jewellery designer Nicky Sadler to create some macramé plant hangers complete with hand-thrown ceramic pot and trailing plant. Tweeny also has some other gorgeous pottery pieces perfect for Mother’s Day including ceramic wine goblets or limited-edition tea cups complete with individual tea strainers, whilst Nicky has some beautiful enamel on copper earrings in a variety of stunning colours.

Not forgetting High Street heroes Marks and Spencer, Boots and Holland and Barrett, which are all open in Drake Circus as essential shops during lockdown. So, you can still pop into the Mall and stock up on your mum’s favourite perfume or beauty brands. Marks and Spencer have some gorgeous new Apothecary home spa products with heavenly scents that are perfect for relaxation. Even if you can’t get to a spa day together right now you can still create the ultimate pamper experience for your mum at home.

Or why not simply pack up a posh picnic and prosecco and spoil her with a socially distanced outdoor get together on a park bench made for two.
